The translation fund opened by the National Book and Reading Center is now in its fourth year.
In addition to supporting Albanian authors, it is also an invitation to all foreign publishers who want to publish Albanian literature. Large languages are missing from the applications of foreign publishing houses that are interested in translating the book into Albanian.
“This year there were about 14 applications, but I am sorry to say that the map of foreign publishing houses that have an interest in the Albanian book, is still in the region. There is a lack of demand for major languages. English for example, given its access to the international book market. We do not have any applications this year from English, but there is an increased interest from Greek, Italian, Turkish, who seek to publish new authors of Albanian literature. “
Interest in languages such as Italian, French or Greek still remains. But the list is headed by Serbian.
“In the framework of the agreement with the Ministry of Culture of Serbia and in the framework of Open Balkan, there has been an awakening of the interest of publishing houses in the neighboring country to publish Albanian authors, this is seen and reflected in the number of applications that have come to this fund, where the requirements for translation into Serbian are greatest. ”
The winners will be announced on May 20th. The fund is worth 10 thousand euros, the same as in previous years for five to six works. While the problem remains the limited number of translators.
“We have a shortage of translators from German, English, French. We are working on this through a series of international cooperation. “
