The Canadian Parliament has voted to declare Beijing treating Uighurs as genocide, hours after China claimed that the treatment of this minority group is a “shining example” of progress in the field of human rights.
This point, which states that Uighurs in China “have been and are subject to genocide,” was adopted unanimously on 22 February.
The Canadian Parliament has also voted to pass an amendment requiring the transfer of the Winter Olympics from Beijing if China continues to treat Uighurs the same.
Relations between China and Canada have been strained in recent years and the move is expected to further escalate the situation.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week that there had been significant reports of abuses in Xinjiang, with human rights groups believing that at least 1 million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities were imprisoned in camps.
Calls for action from Canada strengthen other Western countries’ demands for human rights in China.
The United States has already used the word genocide when describing the treatment of Uighurs in China.
China has dismissed such comments, describing Xinjiang as an internal matter.
Beijing claims that the camps there are intended to provide training and help fight Islamic extremism.
