Turkey wants to change the name by which it is known abroad. A senior Turkish diplomat claimed that a letter had been sent to the United Nations asking the UN and other international organizations to use the name “Türkiye” instead of “Turkey” in the future.
The state news agency Anadolu says that Turkey no longer wants to be called “Turkey” in the international arena and international diplomatic documents, with the English name, but “Türkiye”.
President Recep Tayyip Erdo .an considers that the definition “Made in Türkiye” better expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation. However, there seems to be another reason for this initiative, which started in December 2021 with a decree signed by Erdogan.
The use of the English toponym has long been opposed by Turkey, due to the fact that the word “turkey” in English also means “turkey”.
At the end of last year, Turkey decided to introduce the name “Made in Turkey” for its export products, and it is already used in promotional videos of tourism in this country.
