A map shared on social networks has become the bone of contention for the next debate between Turkey and Greece.
It is the Greek prime minister who is this time seeking explanations from Ankara, for a map showing several large Greek islands inhabited in the Aegean Sea that are claimed to belong to Turkey.
“Take a good look at this map. Crete, Rhodes, Lesvos, Chios, Samos all taken from Turkey”. Mitsotakis wrote on Twitter on Monday.
The map is said to have been given to Devlet Bahçeli, head of a nationalist party allied with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, from the new ultra-nationalist group Gray Wolves.
The head of the organization had posted a photo of the map on Sunday on Twitter, claiming that the “glorious Turkish flag” had been “usurped by Greece”.
Relations between Greece and Turkey have been strained for decades over a range of issues, including underwater exploration rights and the sovereignty of uninhabited islands.
The latest spat has focused on Greek islands off Turkey’s coast, where Ankara accuses Athens of maintaining a military presence in violation of treaties.
Greece has argued that it is acting according to international law and is defending its islands in the face of Turkish hostility.
