Greece expressed concern following Turkey’s statements on its willingness to increase military co-operation with Spain. Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias made the remarks following talks with Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares in Athens.
Last month, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said his country hopes to boost defense co-operation with Spain – which is also a NATO member – by purchasing a second aircraft carrier and possibly a submarine.
Erdogan told a joint news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez that Turkey and Spain have already co-operated on building a Spanish warship.
“The first aircraft carrier was not large, so we agreed to build another larger one,” he said. “There are many things we can do in the defense industry, including unmanned aerial vehicles, armed or not,” he added.
Dendias immediately spoke out against increased military co-operation between Madrid and Ankara, and recalled that European Union members had agreed not to export military technology that could be used “for acts of aggression or regional destabilization”.
He said Albares offered a “clear position” that Spain would act within the framework of EU decisions.
All this comes at a time when Greece itself is meanwhile implementing the project of modernizing its air force and navy with large acquisitions from France.
