Black Sea energy reserves are enough to cover global natural gas demand for the next 45 years, said Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy leader and former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.
“Black Sea natural gas reserves are now estimated at 540 billion cubic meters.
It’s great luck. “The Black Sea is able to cover the world’s gas needs for the next 45 years,” Yildirim told Vednas media. Ankara is paying close attention to its gas reserves and says that the Sakarya field near the Black Sea was one of the biggest discoveries in this regard. Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Donmez announced that Turkey plans to start gas production in the first quarter of next year.
Turkish authorities are hoping that the initial gas production will reach 10 million cubic meters per day but within three or four years it will reach 40 million. In the summer of 2020, Turkish gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean, which Athens considers Greece’s “exclusive economic zone”, sparked strong tensions between the two countries, which even raised fears of a military conflict.
In 2021, Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated once again that oil exploration in the area will continue, but for now apparently the focus has shifted to the Black Sea region.
