Turkish military forces said they had found Swedish anti-tank weapons along with other weapons in a cave used as a base by Kurdish PKK militants in northern Iraq.
The Ministry of Defense said in the update of the military operation against what it calls Kurdish “terrorist” PKK in northern Iraq, that it is continuing the attacks despite the harsh terrain and difficult weather conditions.
They added that the militants hiding in the cave had been neutralized after opening fire on Turkish forces.
Turkey uses the term “neutralize” to mean that the militants in question were surrendered, killed or captured by them.
Several other caves in the area were attacked by Turkey after intensifying operations, in which, according to Ankara, five Turkish soldiers were killed.
They added that Swedish-made AT-4 anti-tank weapons had been found, along with several other types of weapons and ammunition as well as televisions, satellite receivers, generators, heaters and supplies.
One of the bases was a cave with several compartments, divided by rooms and by stairs connecting different levels, the Turkish ministry added.
Since 2020, Turkey has been conducting operations against militants in northern Iraq, whom it accuses of terrorist attacks in Turkey and border areas.
The latest operation was launched in April in the Iraqi region of Metina.
The PKK has been listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU, as it is considered responsible for the deaths of about 40,000 people, writes the Turkish state agency Anadolu.
