Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu was visiting the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem yesterday, the third holiest site of the Islamic religion.
His visit comes as part of Turkey’s efforts to repair ties with Israel, following the breakdown between them since the Israeli military operation in Gaza in 2008.
Bringing Turkey-Israel ties closer is expected to be an advantage for the Palestinians, the minister said, on his first trip to the Jewish state in 15 years.
He met with Israeli counterpart Yair Lapid with whom they agreed to strengthen economic ties despite years of conflict.
“Even in times of political tension, economic cooperation between our countries has been growing,” said Lapid.
Cavusoglu said Turkey is a major trade partner for Israel and a major destination for Israeli tourists.
“We believe that the normalization of our relations will also help in the peaceful resolution of the conflict,” said the Turkish diplomat.
