The captain of a Turkish Anatolian Airlines plane canceled its take-off from Israel’s main airport yesterday after passengers were sent images of horrific air accidents on their cell phones that caused panic among them.
Israeli air authorities said the plane was carrying out a brief stop at supply at Ben Gurion Airport when the incident occurred.
Officers disembarked the passengers and crew and their luggage was re-checked.
Authorities said several young Israelis had been identified as responsible for the panic maneuver, and were being questioned. The plane was restarted a few hours later after obtaining a flight permit from the authorities.
The Boeing 737 had 160 passengers and was just taking off when the passengers notified the crew of receiving strange messages on their cell phones. The captain was informed and decided to return to the terminal.
Local agency Hebrew Ynet said the panic images were distributed with the AirDrop app, an Apple service to send information from one Apple device to another over short distances. All the panic images were taken only from iPhone handsets, the report said.
Provocative footage showed a Turkish Airlines plane crashing in the Netherlands in 2009 and another crash in the US in 2013, the Israeli network wrote.
The passengers were later notified to return to the plane after the inspection, or if they wished to stay in Israel.
In recent weeks there have been many problems or unexpected delays at European airports, which coincides with the period of rest and departure of citizens to various tourist destinations.
