“Serbia faced tremendous pressure to vote in favor of the UN resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine,” said Aleksandar Vucic, in a desperate attempt to justify to Russia that Serbian Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic described the day before “as Belgrade’s biggest supporter”.
Serbia has long sought to maintain a difficult balance between European aspirations and loyalty to Moscow. But this time, she was openly asked to position herself as the UN General Assembly voted on resolutions submitted by the US and Albania.
Serbia voted in favor of the resolution, but reiterated its position that it would not impose sanctions on the Kremlin. Vucic made it clear that his country would not send weapons to Ukraine, nor would it allow the passage of weapons “sent to war zones.”
“What is happening in and around Ukraine is just the beginning,” Vucic said, and that “pressure” on Serbia will increase in the coming days.
“We faced tremendous pressure,” he said, adding that Serbia was in a difficult situation and today less than ever had an understanding of its position. There is still no reaction from Moscow, while the US Embassy in Belgrade and European diplomats welcomed Serbia’s decision, underlining that one hundred and forty-one countries supported this historic vote and condemned Russian aggression against a democratic country.
