At least two people were killed and 40 others injured when a rare tornado struck a city in the U.S. state of Michigan.
A devastating windstorm destroyed the town of Gaylord last night, knocking down several buildings and overturning cars on the city’s main road.
Local meteorologist Jim Keysor said people in Gaylord had never seen such an extreme weather event in their hometown.
He added that such winds are unusual in Michigan because of the large lakes that absorb the energy of storms.
“Children and adults have never seen weather like this in Gaylord,” said Keysor.
Residents say they had received alarm messages hours before the tornado hit and some of them were sheltered in safer environments.
The Red Cross had set up a shelter in a church for those affected as the governor of Michigan declared a state of emergency freeing up additional resources for the Otsego region.
