About 100 victims who were taken hostage and were being held in the mountains in northwestern Nigeria have been rescued by the country’s security forces.
Nigerian police said on Tuesday that the victims had been abducted two months ago by criminal gangs.
The Nigerian army and police in recent months have cracked down on armed groups, known as bandits, who have carried out numerous robberies and kidnappings.
Police announced that in Monday’s operation, 68 victims who were being held in camps were rescued. The operation was carried out with the help of former bandits, who turned into police informants.
The victims, including women, children and men, had been held in solitary confinement for more than three months.
““All survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.”, it is said in the police statement.
Since last year, bandits have attacked schools and colleges to abduct hundreds of students and pupils and then demanded payment for their release.
