About two-thirds of Russians believe the coronavirus is a man-made biological weapon, a new poll shows today.
64 percent of respondents said they believed the Covid-19 is a new form of artificially created biological weapon, according to findings by the independent polling agency Levada.
The results published today showed that 23 percent believed that the virus occurred naturally and 13 did not know the answer, reports The Moscow Times.
Scientists believe Covid-19 was born from animals before it made the transfer to humans, but various theories continue to be debated about its origin.
The Levada agency survey also found a link between the rapid decline in cases in Russia and fears of getting the infection.
56 percent of Russian respondents said they were not afraid of being infected with the virus, compared to 43 percent who said they wanted to avoid being protected from the infection.
The survey showed the smallest number of people afraid of Covid-19 since February 2020, when the pandemic began to spread rapidly globally and Russia was one of the most infected countries.
The poll also showed increased reluctance to get the vaccine, with 62 percent of respondents saying they did not want to be injected with the local Sputnik V vaccine, compared with 30 percent saying they wanted it.
Younger people were more skeptical about the vaccine than older people.
Russia has vaccinated 1.2 percent of its population of about 150 million since the injections were delivered in December.
Today the country registered 11,571 new cases and 333 deaths.
The Levada survey said one in five respondents knew someone infected with Covid-19, compared to 28 percent who said they did not know anyone infected with the virus.
The poll was conducted with 1,601 participants from 50 regions of Russia, from February 18 to 24, writes DailyMail.
