Ukraine will try to evacuate civilians through six “humanitarian corridors” today, including Mariupol surrounded by Russian forces.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk confirmed that the country’s armed forces have agreed to cease fighting in the areas in question for 12 hours, from 09:00 to 21:00, and called on Russian forces to fulfill the commitment of for local ceasefires.
On Tuesday, the first evacuations were successfully carried out and the hopes are that this ceasefire will last. It is estimated that 5,000 people, some of them in private cars, fled the heavily bombed city of Sumy alone, on the border with Russia.
Authorities in Kiev have previously accused Moscow of bombing humanitarian corridors just as people were trying to flee Mariupol.
It is not yet known where the six proposed humanitarian corridors lead. The previous ones, proposed by Moscow, sent people to Russia and Belarus, but were rejected by the Ukrainian government.
About 1.3 million people have fled Ukraine to Poland since the Russian occupation of Ukraine, the Polish Border Agency announced. In total, according to the UN, since the beginning of the occupation, more than 2 million Ukrainian refugees have been displaced.
The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch said the European Union’s solidarity and empathy for people fleeing the war in Ukraine are wonderful. However, Judith Sunderland asked why this directive was not activated in 2015, when more than one million Syrians, Afghans and Iraqis arrived on European shores.
