This Easter Sunday marks the end of the second month of the war in Ukraine.
Ukrainians kicked off the day with prayers for those defending the country and those facing dire conditions in Mariupol — photo. At St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Kiev, many citizens brought baskets to be blessed by priests.
Meanwhile on the ground fierce attacks continued. Russia resumed its attack on the last defenders at the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, although it had declared days earlier that it had achieved victory in the port city and that its forces did not need to take over the plant. Ukrainian officials have estimated that about 2,000 of their bodies are inside the factory along with civilians sheltered in the facility’s underground tunnels.
Meanwhile the southern air command of the Ukrainian armed forces said that two missiles hit a military facility and two residential buildings in the city of Odessa on Saturday. At least 8 people are reported to have lost their lives from the attack. A three-month-old baby was among the victims, while eighteen others were injured.
In just eight weeks, Russia has turned back time, forcing Ukraine to relive the worst horrors of the 20th century. Thousands dead, millions displaced, cities turned into ruins.
And yet Russia has failed to invade Kiev and overthrow the government.
