Ukraine has thwarted an attempted Russian advance in the north of its Donetsk region, but the city of Sloviansk and other civilian areas are being heavily shelled, Ukrainian officials said, according to Sky News.
Russia has increased its focus on Donetsk, the southern part of which it already controls, after completing its occupation of neighboring Luhansk region on Sunday with the capture of Lysychansk.
Moscow says the full push of the Ukrainian military from both regions is essential to what it calls its “special military operation,” a now four-month-old offensive that the West says is an unprovoked war.
Ukrainian officials said heavy fighting was taking place as Russian forces tried to advance from Luhansk into the Donetsk region and towards the city of Sloviansk.
“We are restraining the enemy on the border of Luhansk region and Donetsk region”the governor of Luhansk, Serhiy Gaidai, told Ukrainian television.
