The Ukrainian Coast Guard patrolled the waters of the city of Mariupol today near the city of Mariupol amid heightened military tensions and warnings of Russian occupation.
The Ukrainian fleet was once stationed in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, but it disappeared when Russia annexed the peninsula along with ships in 2014.
Patrol captain Oleksandr Surkov looks suspiciously at his barracks machine guns and complains about how ineffective they would be against Russian warships launching maneuvers in the Black Sea. “Our weapons are mainly for border protection, not for war,” the 32-year-old said as the boat entered the industrial port of Mariupol.
“But if they attack, we will defend ourselves with every weapon we have,” Surkov said, reflecting concerns about the alarming situation. Western media say tensions could escalate on Sunday as the fire phase begins in Russian military maneuvers in the Black Sea. The maneuvers will last a week, during which sea trade routes in the Sea of Azov and the Kersh Strait between Russia and Crimea will be blocked.
