A Russian soldier on trial for war crimes in Ukraine has pleaded guilty to killing an unarmed civilian.
Vadim Shishimarin is accused of killing a 62-year-old unarmed civilian with a firearm in the northeastern Ukrainian village of Chupakhivka on February 28.
Ukrainian state prosecutors said Shishimarin and four other Russian servicemen shot and stole a car to escape after their convoy was targeted by Ukrainian forces.
They said Shishimarin was ordered by another soldier to kill the civilian to prevent him from reporting on the Russian presence and fired through the open window of the car with a rifle on the civilian’s head, while the latter died on the spot.
The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of cruelty and brutality against civilians during the occupation and said it has identified more than 10,000 possible war crimes. Russia has denied targeting civilians or engaging in war crimes and has accused Kiev of staging them to tarnish its forces.
Moscow has denied that its troops targeted civilians. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says there are 3,752 civilians killed in Ukraine since Russia launched its occupation on February 24.
