Orthodox Easter was also celebrated by Ukrainian citizens, children and mothers sheltered in Albania due to the war. The celebration was joined today by the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, the US Ambassador to our country, Yuri Kim, and the Ambassador of Ukraine, Volodymyr Shkurov, who attended a rich artistic program with traditional Ukrainian songs, to continue later with lunch hosted by the Municipality of Tirana for this special day.
Mayor Veliaj stressed that the message conveyed by Easter is that right and love triumph over evil. “Christ is risen is probably the strongest message of the day. Today we remember Christ, we remember believers, we remember faith, but the message is more than religious, the message is also political. Like Christ on the cross, we are surrounded by people, authorities, or states who want to see us on the cross. There is power, there are people, who want to see us nailed, subjugated, possibly dead. “But the message of Easter is that right always triumphs – good and love triumph over every evil,” he said.
Veliaj expressed confidence that Ukraine will rise stronger than it was before the war. “There may be some powers that seem stronger, that behave as if they are arrogant, that oppress others. But these powers are like concrete – Seemingly strong but dead, they have no life! We are like this tree, blooming over the strong, over the evil, rising more united and more loving with each other. On this Easter day, where we commemorate the resurrection of Christ, the resurrection and the victory of good over evil, it is a reminder that Ukraine will win. “Ukraine will rise stronger than it did two months ago,” said the mayor.
The mayor assured that despite the fact that Albania is a small country, she and her allies will support Ukraine. “It does not matter if we are a small country like Albania or a big country like America because we are all together to support Ukraine. Like our two clergymen here, whether we wear service clothes daily, wear gloves when cooking service, or caring for the ministry where we raise children, each one of us is called to serve until this battle is won. “We are here to keep our word, just as we will keep our word for all our support for Ukraine,” Veliaj said.
Meanwhile, the US Ambassador, Yuri Kim, underlined that in these difficult moments, all hearts around the world are beating together with those of the citizens of Ukraine. “There are very few days as powerful and symbolic as Easter. This is a moment when we celebrate Christ’s triumph over the Devil, of light over darkness, of hope over despair. I felt all of this when I saw the kids, dancing, as soon as we got here. This is a dark moment and last night, when I could go to church to celebrate Easter Mass, in the moments when we all lit candles, I thought about how all our hearts around the world were beating together, like a single heart “Together with your hearts and the hearts of all of Ukraine,” Kim said.
The Ambassador of Ukraine to Albania, Volodymyr Shukrov thanked the Albanian citizens and the Municipality of Tirana for the support they have given to the Ukrainian people in these difficult moments that their country is going through. For more than a month, with the mediation of the Municipality of Tirana, many citizens who left Ukraine, mainly women and children, have found refuge in Albania.
