Ukrainian intelligence claims that Russia will falsify a terrorist attack on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
“Russia is preparing a ‘terrorist attack’ on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant,” said Ukraine’s intelligence service, according to the Daily Mail.
The warning came after Britain and the US were raising alarm over suspicions that the Kremlin could use chemical weapons in the war.
The warning came a day after Russian Deputy Energy Minister Yevgeny Grabchak said energy had been restored to the dismantled power plant after Ukraine said Russian forces had cut off electricity, according to the Daily Mail.
According to the Daily Mail the intelligence objected to this and reiterated an earlier warning that if the power was cut off, the plant’s diesel emergency generators that provide backup power for security systems could only last 48 hours.
Ukraine’s power outage and recent warning has raised concerns that Chernobyl could be the site of another nuclear disaster, as spent nuclear fuel could not be cooled without electricity to pump cold water into cooling pools.
This would be a disaster for Ukraine and its people.
Russian forces have occupied some of the nuclear power plants located in Ukraine, adding to the fear of the latter but also of other countries.
