Ukraine has been notified by US intelligence agencies of Russian plans to produce propaganda footage of an attack by Ukrainian forces and use them as a pretext to launch a military offensive.
While Kiev awaits more details about these reports, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba says fabricated Russian attacks are to be expected.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said he was not surprised by reports about the possibility of Russia fabricating attacks and using them as a pretext to invade Ukraine.
“The published information does not surprise us. Since 2014 we have seen many insidious actions by Russia. We have seen that they do not stop trying to invent something that then accuses Ukraine. The entire illegal operation to invade Crimea was carried out through fabricated attacks. “Russian soldiers removed all symbols from military uniforms so that no one could identify them.” said Mr. Kuleba at a press conference.
The United States on Thursday accused the Kremlin of plotting to fabricate an attack by Ukrainian forces on Russian territory and using it as a pretext to attack Ukraine.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the scheme involved producing some serious propaganda footage of an actor-staged explosion.
The US has not provided further details about these allegations.
The plan for a fake attack on Russian territory or a group of Russian-speaking people is outlined in declassified US intelligence documents that have recently been shared with Ukrainian officials and European allies.
The Moscow-Kiev crisis is expected to be discussed this month in Berlin at a meeting between Germany, Russia, Ukraine and France./VOA
