Ukrainian officials say at least 35 people were killed and 134 others injured today in a Russian rocket attack.
Moscow fired about 30 cruise missiles at the International Center for Peace and Security, a military base in western Ukraine near the border with Poland, VOA reports. Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko warned today that Russia would not stop in Ukraine, saying it was only a “matter of time before it attacked Poland”. The United States, meanwhile, said NATO would respond forcefully if Russia hit the territory of a Western alliance country.
The United States issued a strong warning against Russia following its attack on a military base near the border with Poland. White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Russia would face a strong response from NATO if its attacks on Ukraine crossed its borders and hit the territories of Western alliance countries.
“President Biden has consistently been clear that the United States will work with its allies to protect every inch of NATO territory.”
He said NATO would respond even if Russia accidentally hit the territory of a NATO country.
The attack on the military base near Ukraine’s border with Poland follows a Russian threat to crack down on arms shipments from the West in support of Ukrainian fighters.
On Saturday, a senior Russian diplomat said Moscow had warned the United States that it considered foreign shipments of military equipment to Ukraine to be ‘legitimate targets’.
At the military base, not far from Lviv, NATO has in the past conducted military exercises with Ukrainian troops and deployed military instructors to assist the Ukrainian armed forces.
“Today the Lviv region was hit by rockets. According to preliminary data, more than 30 rockets were fired in the direction of the area. The air defense system worked and managed to intercept several missiles. “The training center in Yavoriv was the target of the attack.” said the governor of the Lviv region, Maksym Kozytskyi.
He said the Russian attack was a testament to Ukraine’s need for NATO assistance in protecting its airspace.
“That is why we continue to call on NATO to close our airspace, because to fight an enemy that attacks not only with troops but also with cruise missiles, it is very necessary to have a good system of air defense “, he said.
NATO troops in Poland are located about 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian military base that was hit by Russia.
Poland is a key country for sending Western military aid to Ukraine.
Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko warned today that Russia would not stop in Ukraine, saying it was only a “matter of time before it attacked Poland”.
“The Russians are trying to expand their borders and I think in a short time they will start attacking Poland. Russia is not stopping. They will continue attacks across the bloc of Eastern European countries to restore the Russian empire they have long dreamed of. “Essentially, this would be a declaration of war on European and NATO countries.” said the member of the Ukrainian parliament.
She said tougher sanctions would be needed to stop Russia’s actions, and called on France and Germany to tighten sanctions on Moscow.
The Russian attack on Ukraine, which began on February 24, has caused more than 2.5 million people to flee the country.
The Kremlin describes its actions as a “special operation” to demilitarize Ukraine. Kiev and its Western allies call this an unfounded pretext to start the war.
