4.8 million children have fled Ukraine since Russian forces invaded the country, according to the UN.
UNICEF Director of Emergency Programs Manuel Fontaine said the number of children who had fled the country was incredible.
“They have been forced to leave everything behind, their homes, schools and their family members,” he told the UN Security Council, according to Sky News.
““I’ve heard stories of desperate steps parents are taking to get their children safe, and children are sad that they can not go back to school.”
The figures come after Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, claimed that Russia had taken more than 121,000 children from Ukraine and reportedly drafted a bill to simplify and expedite adoption procedures for orphans and even those with parents and other relatives.
Most of the children fled the besieged southern port city of Mariupol and were sent to eastern Donetsk and then to the Russian city of Taganrog, according to Kyslytsya.
