A popular tourist island in the Philippines, Siargao, is among the areas most devastated by a powerful typhoon that hit the country.
Typhoon Rai hit Siargao Island as winds reached speeds of up to 195 kilometers per hour.
In the province of Surigao del Norte west of the island, the mayor of the city, Ernesto Matugas, described the effects of the typhoon as “severe”.
“Everything is damaged, the roofs have collapsed and access to the road is blocked by landslides,” Matugas said.
The tropical storm devastated many homes, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes. According to the United Nations (UN), an estimated 13 million people were affected by the storm. So far only one death has been confirmed as a result of the typhoon.
Although the main airport terminal on the island has been damaged, the runway has already been cleared to launch rescue operations.
The state of the Philippines is often hit by strong storms, averaging 20 of them a year.
Typhoon Goni, which hit the country in November 2020, was among the most powerful in the Philippines in recent years.
