UN scientists have unveiled a plan they believe will reduce the effect of climate change before it is too late for the rest of the world.
A recent UN report says an immediate cessation of carbon dioxide emissions is needed. To avoid further consequences of global warming, scientists say the world needs to keep rising temperatures to 1.5 degrees C or below this century.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says a bigger rise in temperatures would bring unusual heat waves, storms and floods like never before
But the good news scientists say is that the world is still in time to do something. Keeping temperatures low requires fundamental changes both in energy production, industry, transportation, and the way we treat nature. For temperatures to stay below 1.5 g Celsius, carbon emissions in everything we do must be reduced before 2025. To understand this more clearly, scientists say the amount of CO2 the world has emitted in the last decade is the same as we have left to stay below this temperature threshold.
“I think the report shows us that we have reached the point now or never,” said the report’s lead author. Heleen De Coninck. The coming years are critical according to scientists because if carbon dioxide emissions do not fall by 2030, it will make it impossible to lower temperatures in the next century.
