The UN reported that more than 12,000 people are officially held in 27 prisons and detention centers in Libya, while thousands more are held in illegal and often “inhumane conditions in facilities controlled or secret by armed groups,” Anadolu reported. Agency (AA)

According to an Associated Press (AP) report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN political mission in Libya continues to document arbitrary detentions, torture, sexual violence and other violations of international law at operated facilities. by the government and other groups.

Stressing that there are thousands of prisoners not included in official statistics provided by the Libyan authorities, Guterres announced that more than 12,000 people are officially held in 27 prisons and detention centers across Libya while thousands more are detained on parole terms. illegal and often “in inhumane conditions controlled by armed groups or in secret facilities”.

“I am deeply concerned about the continuing human rights violations of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Libya,” Guterres wrote in a report to the UN Security Council.

He said migrants and refugees, men and women, face increasing risks of rape, sexual harassment and trafficking by armed groups and international traffickers as well as by Interior Ministry Department officials to combat Illegal Migration.

Immigrants and refugees face arbitrary detentions

In recent years, Libya has become the dominant point of arrest for migrants trying to escape war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East to Europe.

Guterres said migrants and refugees, including those rescued or captured while trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe, and those repatriated to Libya by the Libyan Coast Guard, face extensive arbitrary detentions.

Guterres said that since December 14, the Coast Guard had detained 30,990 migrants and refugees and returned them to Libya, adding that this was “almost three times the total number of people returning by 2020.”

He criticized the deportation of hundreds of people from Chad, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan from Libya’s eastern and southern borders since August. The UN leader said the immediate mass deportation leaves many refugees and migrants extremely vulnerable.
