The UK Armed Forces Secretary says London is working to confirm whether Russian forces have used chemical weapons in Ukraine.
James Heappey told the BBC that reports that such ammunition had been used against the besieged southern city of Mariupol had circulated on Ukrainian social media, but neither British defense intelligence nor their Kiev counterparts had been able to verify these claims.
Heappey adds that the UK is working to find out if chemical weapons have been used.
He echoed the comments of the British Foreign Secretary on Monday night that Russia will be held accountable and that any use of chemical weapons is disgusting and “crosses borders”.
If there is evidence that such weapons have been used, then “all options are on the table” in terms of the international response, says Heappey.
“President Putin must be aware that the use of chemical weapons is unacceptable,” he added.
