A key underwater communications cable has been destroyed in Tonga as a result of the volcano and could take up to four weeks to repair, the New Zealand Foreign Ministry has said.
The cable was damaged after the volcano erupted on Saturday, disabling communications inside and outside this Pacific island.
The blast then triggered a tsunami, which left three people dead.
“US cable company SubCom has said it will take at least four weeks for the communications cable in Tonga to be repaired,” the State Department said in a statement.
SubCom has said it is working with the telecommunications company in Tonga to mobilize a cable repair boat, the Reuters news agency reported.
Tonga has failed to make contact with the rest of the world since Saturday’s blast.
This is not the first time Tonga’s underwater cables have been damaged.
A bad weather of 2019 has resulted in almost complete cessation of mobile and internet services for the nearly 100,000 inhabitants of this island.
