US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield called on other UN member states to hold Russia responsible for the invasion of Ukraine in comments at a UN General Assembly special session on Ukraine that she noted that was the first such session in 40 years.
Thomas-Greenfield said Russian forces are destroying vital infrastructure for the Ukrainian people and Russian President Vladimir Putin seems ready to step up the occupation.
“We have seen videos of Russian forces moving extremely deadly weapons into Ukraine, which has no place on the battlefield,” he said. This includes cluster munitions and vacuum bombs – which are banned under the Geneva Convention. We have seen the deadly 40-mile-long column attacking towards Kiev. President Putin continues to escalate the situation – putting Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert, threatening to invade Finland and Sweden. At every step of the way, Russia has betrayed the United Nations. “Russia’s actions are against everything that this body represents.” she said.
A little background on the event: A multiple Russian thermobaric missile was spotted by the CNN team south of Belgorod, Russia, near the border with Ukraine early Saturday afternoon. They are sometimes called “vacuum bombs” because they absorb oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a powerful explosion and a large pressure wave that can have devastating effects. There is no evidence that thermobaric weapons were used in the conflict in Ukraine.
What Biden said: US President Joe Biden was asked earlier today if he believed Russia was committing war crimes, to which he replied: “We are following him closely. “It’s too early to say.”
In her remarks, Thomas-Greenfield also praised Russian citizens protesting the war and called on Russian soldiers to lay down their arms, placing the blame for the war on Putin alone.
“The truth is that this war was the choice of one man and one man: President Putin.”
