The US State Department said Monday it was aware of reports that Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore had been detained by the military, but that it was “too early” to define developments in the West African country.
“We call for the immediate release of President Kabore and other government officials, and for the security forces to respect the constitution of Burkina Faso and its civilian leaders,” State Department spokeswoman Ned Price told a news conference.
“We call on all parties in this volatile situation to remain calm and seek dialogue as a way to resolve disputes,” Price added. Earlier Monday, several rebel soldiers appeared on state television to announce that they had ousted President Kabore and that a military junta was already in control of the country.
This development came after fierce fighting was heard in the area around the presidential palace in the capital Ouagadougou. Although the whereabouts of President Kabore were not known, initial reports were that he had been detained and held hostage by rebels, along with several members of his government./VOA
