A U.S. Congresswoman was robbed at gunpoint of cars and personal belongings yesterday in broad daylight in the city of Philadelphia.
Late last night Mary Gay Scanlon’s car was found about 70 miles from the scene in Delaware, with the five suspects inside, police reported.
Among the looted personal belongings were the state work phone and Scanlon ID card. The Democratic congressman himself was not injured, her office announced.
Like many other American cities, Philadelphia has seen an increase in violent crime in the last year.
Democrat Mayor Jim Kenney called the robbery at 2:45 p.m. “revolting.”
He added that the suspects are being questioned but no other details of the ongoing investigation have been released.
Two male assailants had targeted Ms. Scanlon as she walked into the parking lot towards her Acura MDX car.
A dark-colored SUV was then approached from which two armed individuals emerged asking for her keys and personal belongings.
“She grew up in Philadelphia and knew she would not find anything!” commented Democrat and Congresswoman Brendan Boyle. And in fact after getting what they were looking for, the robbers were gone.
Philadelphia has experienced an 80% increase in car hijackings compared to 2021, according to the network CBS News.
Armed robberies have increased by 27% compared to 2020 while last year the murders reached a record 544, compared to 347 in 2019, writes Wall Street Journal.
The robbery of Mrs. Scanlon, who entered Congress in 2018, comes just 24 hours after the gun robbery of another congresswoman’s car in Chicago.
Illinois Democratic Sen. Kimberly Lightford was with her husband when gunmen stormed a Mercedes SUV on Tuesday night, police said.
