The United States has intelligence revelations that Russia has drawn up a plan to fabricate a pretext for a possible invasion of Ukraine, the New York Times and the Washington Post reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The New York Times reports that Russia’s plan includes the use of a fake video staging an attack that Moscow will present as being carried out by the Ukrainian military, either on Russian territory, or against pro-Russian residents in eastern Ukraine.
The paper reports that the plan, which the United States hopes to prevent by making it public, aims to use the video to accuse Ukraine of “genocide.”
“Then (Russia) will use its indignation at the video to justify an attack, or to push separatist leaders in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine to seek Russian intervention,” the New York Times reported.
According to the newspaper, US officials will not publish any direct evidence of the Russian plan, or details of how they learned about it, so as not to compromise their sources and methods.
The Russian disinformation campaign, which focuses on false accusations of genocide against Ukraine, as well as the recent actions of the Russian parliament to recognize the governments of the separatist regions in Ukraine, are in line with the findings of the American intelligence.
The Washington Post reports that the administration plans to make this secret information public on Thursday.
The newspaper cites sources familiar with the Russian plan to say that it was drafted by the Russian security services and is in the advanced stages of preparation.
“The plan is relevant, but it is a separate plan from other plots uncovered by Western intelligence services, including the deployment of Russian saboteurs in eastern Ukraine and another scheme announced last month by the British government aimed at destabilizing “and the appointment of a pro-Russian leader to head it,” officials told the Washington Post.
