Washington has imposed new sanctions on the Russian elite, which continues to support President Putin, despite his brutal attack on Ukraine.
The Treasury Department said these individuals have been enriched at the expense of the Russian people and that members of their families have been placed in senior positions in Russia. Others run large Russian companies and are responsible for securing the resources needed to support Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine.
According to the Treasury Department these individuals and their family members will be disconnected from the US financial system, their assets in the United States will be frozen, and their properties will be frozen.
Among those targeted are Alisher Burhanovich Usmanov, one of Russia’s richest individuals and a close ally of Putin. His property will be blocked in the United States while the super yacht was seized one day by a goose.
Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, who is considered the main supplier of his propaganda, will also be sanctioned.
Meanwhile, an oligarch born in Ukraine but living in London has been found hanged in his villa. The 66-year-old gas and oil mogul Mikhail Watford is thought to have killed himself. People close to him say that Watford was terrified of the idea that Putin might have put him on his blacklist of individuals he wanted to eliminate, while the situation in Ukraine had aggravated him even more psychologically.
