US President Joe Biden on Wednesday overturned an order from his predecessor blocking many green card applicants from entering the United States.
Former President Donald Trump released the ban last year, saying it was necessary to protect American workers amid high unemployment due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Biden rejected that reasoning in a statement Wednesday repealing the visa ban. The Democratic president said the move had prevented families from reuniting in the United States and harmed American businesses.
Democrat Biden has vowed to repeal many of Mr. Trump’s tough immigration policies. Immigrant protection groups had demanded in recent weeks that he lift the visa ban, which expired on March 31.
Mr Biden enacted another measure banning most temporary foreign workers.
In October, a federal judge in California blocked Mr. Trump’s ban on those foreign workers after it affected hundreds of thousands of U.S. businesses that challenged that decision in court.
Curtis Morrison, an immigration attorney in California who represents those affected by the detention, said Mr. Biden will now have to deal with a large number of claims that have dragged on for months as the pandemic disrupted most proceedings from the Department. of the State. The process could take years, he said.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment./VOA/
