The United States has warned that information technology workers in North Korea are trying to secure jobs remotely, concealing their true identities, in order to steal money for Pyongyang.
Many of them claim to be from other parts of Asia, said three US government agencies.
They are suspected of helping fund weapons programs in North Korea that violate international sanctions.
This state has conducted several missile tests in recent months.
In March, North Korea tested a ballistic missile, for the first time since 2017.
“North Korea sends thousands of skilled IT workers around the world to generate revenue that contributes to its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs, in defiance of US and United Nations sanctions.” the US State Department, the US Treasury Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said in a joint statement.
According to the statement, the workers are in North Korea, and other countries, including China and Russia.
A smaller number are found in Africa and Southeast Asia.
The statement added that companies hiring North Korean workers could face sanctions for violating sanctions.REL
