Ukraine’s continued military success could increase the likelihood that President Vladimir Putin will turn to nuclear weapons.
The statement came from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez, who said he feared the Russian leader could use nuclear weapons to “save face.”
“One of my concerns is that ironically, the more successful the Ukrainians are, the greater the risk that Putin will do something because he is losing and has to keep his face at home. “And so the potential of a chemical, biological or tactical nuclear weapon could increase as a result.”
Meanwhile, EU energy ministers will hold urgent talks today as the bloc seeks a united response to Moscow’s demand that European buyers pay for Russian gas in rubles or face the interruption of their supplies.
Russia cut off gas supplies to Bulgaria and Poland last week after they refused to meet its demand to pay effectively in rubles.
