US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs Barbara Leaf urges Israeli officials to end military operations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including demolition and evictions
The US administration has urged Israel to avoid escalating violence or unilateral measures against the Palestinians ahead of a visit to the region next month by US President Joe Biden, the Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.
The Jewish daily Haaretz said US Assistant Secretary of State for Middle East Affairs Barbara Leaf had called on Israeli officials to end military operations against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including demolishing houses and deporting them.
The White House announced that Biden is scheduled to visit Israel and the West Bank on July 13.
The visit comes amid rising tensions in the West Bank over repeated Israeli arrest campaigns in the occupied territory and the daily incursions of settlers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in East Jerusalem.
Since the beginning of this year, according to Palestinian figures, over 65 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army fire in raids and clashes in the West Bank.
