Serious images posted on social media yesterday showed Shanghai residents clashing with police officers wearing scary health uniforms, who urged them to evacuate their homes in order to return to coronavirus isolation centers.
Shanghai, the financial center of China with a population of 25 million, has been placed under severe isolation measures from the increase in Covid-19 cases according to the authorities, but the arbitrariness exercised against the population has reached the point of forcing residents to live in food towers without food or exit opportunity.
Since late March, residents have complained of food shortages and violent quarantines at rapidly built centers.
As of Thursday, several videos were circulating on social networks where residents shouted and pushed at officials in white clothes and police shields.
The incident started when the authorities ordered the evacuation of 39 apartments from the complex to isolate Covid patients there.
“It’s crazy,” a resident told Britain’s Guardian daily. “We never thought this could happen in Shanghai. “We believed they were ‘China’s window to the world,'” Buri said.
The incidents shed a rare light on the rise of public outrage in China, where authorities brutally suppress dissent and censor online protest information.
