Shocked passengers on British airline easyJet looked out of windows to find themselves among Spanish shooters when a false bomb alert was given on social media by an 18-year-old on their plane.
Footage showed the Spanish F18 fighter jet flying close to the A319 passenger jet, which was carrying holidaymakers from Gatwick Airport in London to the coast of Menorca.
EasyJet confirmed the incident, saying the plane “had been intercepted for preliminary security checks”.
As it was later stated an 18-year-old was arrested for making ‘a threatening comment online’.
The development comes despite EU military authorities ordering that the interception of civilian aircraft should be used as a last resort, writes the British Metro.
After sniffer dogs and specialist police officers came to assess the situation it turned out to be a false threat.
Travelers were left waiting for checks at the airport for several hours after landing in the Spanish resort town.
While the suspect is reported to have been fined for the entire police operation and the mobilization of the military aircraft.
The young man is believed to have been traveling on holiday with a group of friends and made the alarming comment shortly before landing on Sunday evening.
In the video of the incident, the military pilot is seen tilting the wings of his plane in front of the passenger vehicle, an air code that means “follow me”.
F-18 fighters can reach speeds of up to 1,500 km per hour and carry an array of armaments of up to 10 missiles of various profiles.
