The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj has responded to the debate raised in the parliament, a week ago, by the deputy of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku regarding the quality of water in Tirana.
While expressing special gratitude to Vladimir Gjinos, the employee who has been working for over half a century in the Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Tirana, Veliaj chose the opportunity to compare the current situation of UKT with the situation where it was 7 years ago, when the Municipality of Tirana was headed by the former chairman of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, where Tabaku was deputy mayor.
“I remember what enterprise we inherited in the water supply. It was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy. Not only did he not pay his salaries, but Tirana was supplied with 7 hours of water a day. This situation was not 50-60 years ago, we are talking about 7 years ago. And today we have a completely different Tirana.
Our ambition has not been fulfilled yet, but the fact that we have moved to a city with 17-18 hours of water, and the fact that for 95% of the citizens this is not felt at all thanks to the system how we operate with local warehouses, is definitely a contribution of Lad and to people like Ladi, who have dedicated more than half a century to an institution, perhaps one of the most difficult to manage, ”said Veliaj.
He recalled another detail that speaks more than anything about the situation where the Municipality of Tirana was located.
“When I heard Jorida, the former deputy mayor, when she talked about water in Tirana, I remember the first day in the Municipality, where at the second floor toilet in this building, where all the foreign delegations come, there was a big barrel water with sapllake. Imagine, when the prince of Monaco came to Tirana, if he had to go to the toilet he would find Luli and Jorida’s plate! It makes us laugh now, that it seems to us like it is a fairy tale from the past, but who has worked in the Municipality knows that in the second floor toilet, in the time of Luli and Jorida, there was a big barrel, from those barrels of oil, or mazut, which was filled with water and had a sailplate that floated like Christopher Columbus’ ship in search of the new world, which he could not find. Do you understand that presidents and all these people we have been waiting for all these years should come and take them to the funeral !? When I hear those talking about water it is a very big insult to intelligence. I have tried not to politicize things in this Municipality, except when I have to protect the work of the Municipality, but we are day and night today, “ said Veliaj.
The mayor said that Tirana Water Supply is one of the only companies in the Balkans that has passed the test of being serious and today is a profitable company. As for bottled water, Veliaj said that service to delegations is part of the protocol.
“I saw that story broke because the Municipality takes bottled water, but UKT is not allowed to sell bottled water on the market. If a delegation comes, we can not tell them to go to the sapllakja. Now there are no more saplings, because the hygiene in the municipality is impressive, but when a personality comes you will give him packaged water, which is offered in all the hotels of Tirana, you can not tell him to go back to Luli and Jorida’s saplqla ”.
On the eve of “May 1”, Workers’ Day, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj thanked all employees who take care of the work and services in the city, and expressed his gratitude to the 11 oldest employees of the municipality among years, who serve in various enterprises of the city.
