The footage shows the inspiring moments when the mother elephant was rescued by vets who gave her first aid by jumping on her chest as her anxious cub looked on in anticipation.
The 10-year-old elephant and the cub had slipped into a drain after heavy rains in Nakhon Nayok, central Thailandit’s yesterday afternoon.
The storm had made the soil and grass of the forest slippery and consequently the pair had fallen into the pit about 3 meters deep.
Heavy rains had made it impossible to extricate the elephants, and veterinarians mobilized a cherry-picking crane to pull the giant animals out of the pit.
The rare video shows the three-hour operation to lift the large mammals, and then the efforts to save the mother.
The park’s chief vet Dr Chananya Kanchanasarak said: “It was impossible to get to the baby so we gave her three doses of sedatives and she lost consciousness and hit her head.”
He added that the mother regained consciousness after being stimulated by doctors and her baby.
A crane was then used to lift the creatures out of the mud pit as the vets continued their work.
As soon as the mother landed on the ground, three vets jumped on her to bring her back to life, and luckily it did.
Delighted officials then watched as the mother elephant and her baby calmly made their way into the forest.
“Despite the riots, the mother did not separate from her baby. The experience touched us as it was one of the most memorable surgeries we have done,” said Dr Chananya.
There are estimated to be around 4,000 elephants living in Thailand, half of them in the wild and the rest in reserves, camps and zoos.
