65-year-old biologist Nan Hauser has long worked for the protection of whales, but it had never happened to her before that while swimming with a humpback whale near the Cook Islands in the Pacific, the giant animal saved her from a shark about 6 meters long.
Although Hauser was horrified by the episode, she managed to film the incident.
It was only after watching the video that she realized the 25-tonne whale was protecting her from a potentially deadly shark attack.
Hauser said: “I’ve been working in whale protection for about 28 years, and at the time I didn’t even realize they were protecting me.”
The Independent network writes that Hauser was swimming with the humpback whale when suddenly the animal held him under its arm and began to push him forward with its nose and beak.
“I wasn’t sure what he was doing when he approached me and started pushing me for about 10 minutes, I even got a few scratches. I had never seen a whale so insistent, pushing me and holding me under its arm”.
While in the water, Hauser saw a whale struggling to get something out, and later realized it was a giant predator, a 20-foot-long tiger shark.
Hauser luckily escaped unharmed but says she has never witnessed such behavior.
