Dramatic footage showed today how the stranded tanker MV Portland Bay will have to remain at sea until at least tomorrow as efforts to tow it to deeper waters are delayed by rough weather.
Attempts to rescue the 170-metre-long vessel were halted yesterday after the ropes being used snapped due to the extreme weather.
Australian port authorities said the difficult relief operation could continue for days as agencies prepared for “slow but steady progress” after the ship lost engine power south of Sydney.
The vessel remains anchored in a secure position in Cronulla, while two tugs await the weather to improve to commence operations.
Portland Bay holds about 1,000 tonnes of fuel and remains in this position as of Tuesday morning.
The vessel unloaded a cargo of cement at Port Kembla and returned to sea on Monday morning. But the fan of the main engine failed shortly after 7.00 and so far the conditions for its repair are impossible.
