Vietnam is reducing the isolation period for international tourists traveling there from three to one day, starting March 15, a government statement was said on Wednesday.
Newcomers will be required to isolate themselves in a hotel and must test negative for COVID-19 before leaving the hotel.
Vietnam’s international border was closed to tourists in March 2020 after the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe.
For a long time, only Vietnamese nationals and international experts working in the country were able to board flights to Vietnam.
Travel rules were significantly eased earlier this year when the three-day period of isolation was introduced, as Vietnam gradually welcomes the return of tourists.
Only those who have been vaccinated with two doses or have recently been cured of the coronavirus can enter Vietnam under current rules.
Visitors must also show a negative antigen test result obtained within 24 hours of arrival or a PCR test obtained within 72 hours.
The tourism industry, which accounted for 10% of the country’s gross domestic product in 2019, has suffered a blow due to the pandemic.
On Tuesday, the tourism ministry urged the government to restore a rule – introduced before the pandemic – that would allow citizens from 24 countries to stay in the Southeast Asian country for 15 days without a visa.
Under the proposal, tourists from countries such as Germany, France, Britain, Denmark, Spain, South Korea, Japan and Russia will be allowed to enter without applying for a visa in advance.
