A total of 164 people were killed last week in violent protests in Kazakhstan. This was announced by the figures of the Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan, state media report there.
More than 2,200 citizens were said to have been injured in the violence, which prompted Kazakhstan security forces to use the violence to quell protests against the country’s government.
According to the Kazakh Ministry of Health, 719 citizens are still being treated in hospitals, 83 of them in critical condition.
Authorities did not comment on the nature of the injuries, reports DPA.
Demonstrations spurred by rising fuel prices began a week ago at the mention of Kazakhstan, before turning into a wider revolt against the government.
In Almaty, the country’s largest city, protests escalated into riots and clashes where dozens of buildings and businesses were burned.
According to a report on state television, 103 people, including two children died in Almaty alone.
About 1,100 people there sought medical help, the report said. It was initially unclear how many of the victims were civilians.
Earlier, authorities had spoken of more than 40 dead, including at least 16 police officers and soldiers.
On Friday, President Kassym-Yomart Tokayev had issued an order to shoot protesters threatening the survival of his government.
After a meeting Sunday, his office said operations to quell the protests were ongoing and described the situation as under control.
“Measures are being taken to find and arrest the terrorists,” he said.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday condemned the Kazakh president’s order to shoot at protesters. Secretary Blinken made these comments for CNN.
If this is national policy, [Unë] I condemn that policy, “said Blinken.
“The authorities in Kazakhstan must be able to deal with the challenges they are facing peacefully, to ensure that the rights of those who are protesting peacefully are being protected,” said Secretary Bliken.
So far, almost 6,000 people have been arrested, including many foreigners, according to the office of Kazakhstan’s president.
