Belgian police used tear gas and water pumps to repel protesters against forced vaccination and other restrictive measures aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
The protest attracted tens of thousands of people, some of whom had come from France, Germany and other countries. Demonstrators, who authorities say could number as many as 50,000, marched through Brussels before gathering in Cinquantenaire Park in the city’s European neighborhood to express their opposition to the pandemic-related government policies.
The European Union offices themselves fell prey to their attacks. EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borell posted a photo showing the damage to his office. Demonstrators chanted “Freedom!” as they marched against the blockages. The footage showed black-clad demonstrators attacking and breaking with solid objects the windows of a building used by the EU diplomatic service.
Similar protests took place in Barcelona and other European cities. Thousands of people have protested through so-called vaccine passports and other rules set by European governments in an effort to end the two-year-old nightmare.
