Chinese authorities said they severely punished some officials after the rapidly spreading video on the network showing an eight-month-old pregnant woman losing her baby in the closed city of Xi’an when the hospital refused her entry because she did not have a Covid test.
The city of 13 million has been isolated for two weeks in line with Beijing’s strict “zero Covid” strategy. The disturbing incident took on new dimensions when the woman’s granddaughter posted on social media images of her sitting on a plastic bench outside the hospital and surrounded by a pool of blood. The post was later removed, but it already had hundreds of millions of clicks and sparked a huge outrage on the internet about the hardships Xi’an residents are facing.
Local authorities later issued a statement saying the incident at Xi’an Gaoxin Hospital had caused “widespread concern and a negative social impact” and that the local health bureau was investigating the incident. The general manager of the hospital was immediately suspended and the “responsible persons” in the outpatient department were removed from their posts.
The hospital was also told to “apologize to the public”. Posted on the official local government account of the city on the WeChat network, the video received nearly 600 million views within hours of publication – thus clearly illustrating the great interest that this serious case created within China.
The post, which went viral later on Twitter-like Weibo platforms, showed how hospital staff refused to accept the pregnant woman severely but left her out for two hours because she did not have a negative Covid test performed within the last 48 hours. The granddaughter wrote that her negative test result had expired just a few hours ago.
