Although not officially confirmed, the European Union’s special envoy for dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, is expected to visit Kosovo and Serbia in late January and early February, as part of efforts to organize new dialogue meetings.
So said diplomatic sources in Brussels.
They have not denied that in some of the meetings that Lajcak will have in Pristina and Belgrade, he may be accompanied by the US envoy to the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar.
According to sources in Brussels, “details of the meetings are still being prepared”.
The expectations are that Lajçak and Escobar will be in Prishtina on February 1st and 2nd, while they will visit Belgrade first.
“The meetings and travels of the EU Special Envoy are part of his day-to-day work, which we do not comment on or warn of at Brussels headquarters. “If the special envoy goes to meet partners in the region, press releases are made by the relevant field delegations, if appropriate,” EU spokesman Peter Stano said when asked if a plan was planned. Joint visit of EU Special Envoy Lajcak to Pristina and Belgrade from 31 January to 2 February.
Sources in Brussels have warned that they expect the issue of organizing voting for the elections of Serbia in the territory of Kosovo to be opened in the dialogue.
An eventual solution is expected before Serbia’s parliamentary elections in early April.
The Kosovo government has not agreed to allow voting in Serbia’s referendum, held on Sunday, January 16th.
The European bloc has expressed regret even after the referendum.
Serbian Prime Minister Ana Bernabic is expected to visit Brussels next week, which has warned it will ask the EU to allow Serbs in Kosovo to vote in Serbia’s elections.
For a long time there were no meetings within the dialogue.
The European bloc had ambitions to hold a summit at the end of last year, but this did not happen with the clarification that the parties have not expressed the proper will to achieve any result.
The dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, mediated by the European Union, started in 2011.
