Not long ago, Russian troops savagely attacked the Ukrainian capital – but now the history of this chapter of the occupation is in a museum.
As the fighting continues elsewhere, Ukrainians are gathering in a new exhibition in Kiev called “Crossroads of Ukraine,” featuring artifacts found after the Russian military was forced to withdraw from occupied areas around the capital.
Rockets, food rations, helmets and other abandoned objects in the region north of Kiev are on display at an exhibition at a World War II museum.
Yuriy Savchuk, curator of the exhibition:
“In this exhibition, you can see the war. Through original artifacts and artistic interpretations
Zoya Didok, Visitor:
“It is really very difficult to be here and I am very happy that I was not in those villages at the time when the Russian soldiers were there.”
Mykola Voropaiev, Visitor:
“I think this exhibition is really interesting. “People can come here and see what was happening in our city and in Ukraine.”
The glass boxes in the exhibition hold personal notes and cards of Russian soldiers killed on the front line. Their passports show how young they were.
A broken Siberian license plate also proves that some came from far away.
