The Kremlin has rejected an order from the International Court of Justice to stop the attacks in Ukraine, claiming that the request would be implemented, with both sides must first agree to end hostilities.
Speaking to reporters a day after the UN Supreme Court announced its ruling, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said coldly that Moscow “could not take it into account.”
Ukraine submitted its case to the ICJ shortly after the Russian occupation began on February 24, saying Moscow’s stated excuse that it was acting to prevent a genocide in eastern Ukraine was unfounded.
The court said Moscow must ensure that “any armed or irregular military unit that may be directed or supported by it, as well as any organization and person that may be subject to its control or direction, should not undertake any step to advance the military operations mentioned at this point.
But according to Peskov, the consent of both parties can not be obtained on this issue, so the decision is invalid. The most important judicial institution of the United Nations also demanded that both parties “refrain from any action that could worsen the situation before the Court, or make it more difficult to resolve it.”
Although the decisions of this body are binding, the ICJ does not have direct means to implement them, and in rare cases in the past some countries have ignored them.
